Tabernaculum is a sinister, rich and complex black metal record, capable of both devastating aggression and haunting, unsettling melody. The diverse range of textures and ideas that this album threads together is breathtaking. Reports of infighting may be exaggerated, but, as with similar black metal scenes in France, Norway, and other parts of the world, a certain amount of antagonism exists as a byproduct of the extreme nature of the music and its practitioners.
Every element will always be pushed to the point where it can no longer be improved. At that point only a select few people had heard it so most were, naturally, rather sceptical. Not exactly the very definition of accessibility. So, as you may notice, we have our own taste and aesthetics, our people we trust and whose work we admire. Listening to this for the first time at Oration festival completely got me off guard and was, by far, the most positively surprising live experience I have had in years.
Rebirth of Nefast is a one man black metal project from Iceland by way of Ireland. It always brings me to the same conclusion: form your own thoughts, make your own rules, and pay no heed to what anyone has to say about them. Cities of comparable size in the U. Yet here we are, eight years later, still talking about it. I can say without ego that Oration and now Ascension is the highlight of the year for most, if not all, black metal enthusiasts here in Iceland. Any other outcome would have been unacceptable.
Tabernaculum by Rebirth of Nefast On an initial or cursory listen, it is easy to miss the numerous smaller details that are incorporated into this album, but which subconsciously worm their way into their mind and enhance the various effects or moods of the songs. Favorite track: Carrion is a Golden Throne. Though it was formed in Ireland in 2006, Lockhart later relocated to Reykjavik, Iceland. As not only a musician but also a promoter, producer, and label manager — one would have to assume Stephen to have a pretty broad perspective on black metal. Oration and Ascension, on the other hand, draws an increasingly international crowd — pushing attendance ever-closer to the five-hundred mark. Most of it has since been substantially upgraded and was never used for what can be heard on the record today. More on this as it developes! The vocals range from hoarse groans to hushed breathy murmurings. All this is cooked up in a black cauldron teeming with a piquant intoxicating fog. And this in turn entails not willingly allowing your vision to be tainted by peripheral sources. After putting such a vast amount of energy into something, I need to be able to live with it, to be able to stand by it. Or at least Dodecahedron have some competition! The six tracks on Tabernaculum each hover around ten minutes in length. Worth noting is how the scene, despite its proliferance, still consists of very few people.
The album is available to buy now from Debemur Morti Productions. The Vánagandr label, which also functions as a showcase for this scene, is run by members of Misþyrming and Naðra. The prime example of this would be a lot of second generation bands; once they had decent studio budgets, all of the feeling and atmosphere of their music went out the window when they had proper production. Stephen says there are still tendencies in black metal to mask objectively poor composition and musicianship with a harsh production. It was during this period I cultivated my production preferences, everything since has basically been a refinement thereof. No one can actually agree on what the rules of this mythical book are but it seems everyone has an opinion on how everyone else is breaking them. A full line-up is being assembled for some select live shows planned during 2014. Since first visiting in 2007, Stephen has been consistently active in the Icelandic black metal community. However, make no mistake, the fact that the album is highly polished never detracts from Tabernaculum's prevailing sense of menace. Many include quieter parts which make the heavier sections all the more striking.
